Facilitation “Productive Meeting” Is NOT An Oxymoron

The Situation

Inefficient meetings had been cited as a leading cause of stress for the employees of a leading graduate school.

The Solution

The organization’s annual all-staff gathering was actually an experiential learning workshop that I developed and facilitated.  The program content included customized case materials based on interviews with stakeholders. Participants conducted two small group meetings. to create realistic meeting conditions,  “secret confederates” deliberately displayed dysfunctional behaviors; giving the meeting participants the opportunity to practice the techniques presented in the workshop. By the end of the day, a set of meeting norms or ground rules had been established to help promote the use of efficient meeting practices.

Two months after the workshop, 88% of participants reported an improvement in meeting efficiency.
